Which industries in Australia are hiring?

As the recession continues to bite, and emigration becomes more and more attractive (and in many cases necessary), Australia's sunny shores and vast expanses are beginning to look very attractive. But are there any jobs? And what industries are hiring? Well we went and found out so you wouldn't have to!

The Australian labour market is booming but it is still difficult to get in! That is because Australia is being understandably selective about which sectors of the labour market it welcomes with open arms and a cold beer. If they don't need you, they don't want you. Hard to argue with the logic, really. So, it is a good idea to try and match your skill set with their requirements.

At last check the Skills Occupation List (SOL) on the Australian Immigration site listed 181 occupations. That seems large but consider the fact that the last SOL contained over 400 and you will get some idea of the drop in demand caused by a surge in supply!

Just as a taster a random chunk of the SOL contained the following

• Urban and regional planner
• Chemical engineer
• Materials engineer
• Civil engineer
• Geotechnical engineer
• Quantity surveyor

Basically, if you want to head down to Australia you need to check the SOL list as soon as possible and get moving on your application. This is a time of extreme competition in the labour market and not one for foot dragging!
