The capital city of Cardiff is certainly the place to explore if you are looking for work in Wales.

Home to the Welsh National Assembly and Millennium Stadium, the city is the nucleus for a variety of sectors, including commercial and financial services, which employs a fifth of the workforce. Major companies including Legal & General, HBOS, The AA and British Gas have headquarters and call centres in the capital.

The biggest employer is the public sector, largely through the city’s schools and hospitals, accounting for a third of all workers. NHS Wales’ headquarters are based here.

Another significant area which offers scope for employment is tourism, as Cardiff welcomes almost 15 million visitors each year. Roles include working in hotels and restaurants and currently a fifth of the city’s workers are involved in this sector.

Retail is also buoyant following the multimillion pound refurbishment of the St David’s Centre, one of Europe’s largest shopping areas. The mall has the biggest John Lewis outside of London, along with a range of big names from the high street. Job vacancies are advertised regularly on the shopping centre’s website at www.stdavidscardiff.com.

Cardiff is the base for Welsh national media with studios for BBC Wales, ITV Wales and S4C. The BBC is opening a new £10 million drama village at the docklands area which will house productions including Casualty, Sherlock and Upstairs, Downstairs. The first filming is scheduled to begin in September 2011.
