Ace that Job Interview! You've primped and polished your resume to an awe-inspiring sheen. You've selected the classiest outfit in your closet. You've brought out your four-leaf clover, hare's foot, and lucky underwear. But are you really prepared for that interview? Follow these steps and you will be. Rehearse. Do it in front of the mirror or with a friend. Have him or her throw potential questions at you and answer them as though you were already at the interview. Know thyself. Prepare a short but substantial answer to the question, “Tell me about yourself.” What is your educational background? What courses or seminars have you taken that are relevant to the position you're applying for? What are your skills and strengths? What are your (relevant) hobbies? What are your accomplishments and ambitions? Know thy employer. By doing so, you'll get a feel of the culture, environment, and goals of the company. This will let you know what kind of approach to take – is it a laid-back, casual atmosphere? Is it a serious, businesslike arena? You'll also be able to highlight what it is about you that can fit well with the company, and your characteristics which will benefit them. Know thy industry. Be in the know with the present situation of your field. Do research, read the news, flip through magazines and wow your interviewer with your knowledge. Show him or her that you will be a valuable asset to the company. Also share relevant experiences you've had in the field. Be confident. First impressions can make or break you. You're selling yourself to the interviewer, so make sure that he or she likes both the package and the contents. Look presentable and be respectful. Also note your body language – smile, try to relax, and make eye contact with the interviewer. Ask questions. If you are offered the jobs, make sure that you are clear on the working hours, the benefits, and the salary offered. Do you know what it is exactly that you will be doing? What training will be given? |
